12/03 - Savory Saturday!

I'm extremely pleased with what we've seen of the Switch so far. I'm glad that Nintendo seems to have realized that gimmicks aren't the way to go. The Wii was revolutionary for its time, but the Wii U had really poor sales despite it having some really good games. They always knock it out of the park with their portable consoles, and they seem to be min/maxing portables with the Switch. Announcing their partnership with Bethesda (plus other companies) and showing Skyrim being played on a portable was a great marketing move to bring in longtime PS/Xbox players.

I just wish Mr. Iwata was alive to see the hype around the Switch...

You know what I'm really excited for? Console pokemon and monster hunter... I don't really buy handhelds so I haven't been able to play those two series. (Well I used to play pokemon but I haven't been able to play monster hunter)

 

I think the WiiU had a really bad marketing. When I worked at Gamestop, people thought the WiiU was just a controller that you used for the Wii. Using the same name was a really bad move.

 

Catching up on today, so a little late on the comment, but POE is a great game. It's way too easy for me to lose a few days in that game.

Took me 25min going a bit slow at the start while I was eating. It has some light writing and be careful to not miss the payment code as they put it in the part that explains what the experiment was about at the end.. for whatever reason.

 

My Pokemon hype hasn't been what it used to be (I got Sun but haven't put much time into it), but I am really interested in what happens with Pokemon and Switch. Gamefreak said that if Switch sales are great, they may be transitioning the main games to the Switch. Rumors have it that a third Sun/Moon version (similar to how Red/Blue had Yellow, Silver/Gold had Crystal, etc) called Stars is in the works. Gen 2 was my favorite, partially for it featuring more than one continent. With the Switch hopefully having much more memory than standard handhelds, I hope this happens again.

Yep, I remember this. A few places actually advertised it as an accessory for the Wii. This target ad is pretty famous, showing the gamepad sitting on top of a Wii.

I have both and I think it depends on a number of factors.

xbox one has a great remote if you plan to watch blu rays and netflix on it. If you have a 4k TV I would suggest the One S. It outputs 4k and has a UHD player built in. Xbox one also has better mod support for skyrim SE right now. Xbox also has real backwards compatibility with an ever increasing library of 360 games.

I don't think there are nearly as many games that are exclusive to one console anymore. I've been seeing more delayed releases than pure exclusives.

If you don't care about any of the above then just go with whichever brand you prefer. I'd never had an xbox before; was loyal to PS until recently. I've really liked the xbox.

I like options and mmos so I get my mmo fix on PC and will play the odd single player game from steam there now and then.

 

I've never done these a9's before & I've done a shit load. I'm gettin the mass rejection jitters, I hope i'm doing it right!

That was really helpful thanks! Been trying to decide on one for a possible joint family Christmas gift this year if it fits the budget.

 

Any of you have a keyboard recommendation? Right now I have a dying Razr keyboard. I do like the mechanical keys, but the quality was not great and the clicking will probably drive my new roomate crazy when I move here in a few months.

 

I feel like I should point out that neither of the consoles actually play games at 4k outside of lightweight indie games.

Without knowing your budget it is hard to suggest stuff but I hear a lot of people like the corsair stuff

I honestly don't know the keyboard market that well but I'll prob be getting a mech keyboard in the next month or so.

You are correct. I was just thinking I should edit my post. The XBox One S will upscale non-4k content and output a 4k signal.

I don't know the specs on the PS4 Pro as I stopped considering it when I found out it didn't have a UHD player. That one may have actual support for 4k games.

 

Not currently, but I know that with the PS4 Pro releasing, developers plan on releasing "PS4 Pro" enhanced games that can natively play in 4k. I would assume the same for the Xbox One S, but I don't know. My girlfriend just bought a PS4 Pro, but I just have a regular XB1.

Why does UHD player part even matter anyways? It has been I think 4 years since I bought any sort of optical media if not longer.
