Most of these people also unfortunately have little or no external support and only other homeless folks on the streets with them. It's also really easy to see someone in a destructive cycle and be like "why don't they just do x or y?"

you would think with it being as expensive as it is they could get some tax money together to help the homeless people, you think people would find it a worthwhile investment to not be known as the city covered in human feces.

I don't think it is as easy as their city council saying "we will spend our tax money on this issue."

It's a complicated situation, but why does San Francisco have such a problem with human feces, do not other cities have large homeless populations as well. Or is it much more rampant in San Francisco.

I can't say for sure as I have never been, but the homeless population is a lot bigger there, from what I understand. Also, I can promise you homeless people have shit on the streets in Indy, too.

SF did put in a bunch of public restrooms somewhere in the late 90s/early 00s.

They turned into drug houses and places for prostitution. Literally no one would go in them for fear of what might be found in them.

At times I'd see a desperate tourist try one out then quickly change their mind, and usually if I was feeling nice/had time/wasn't rushing back to the office I point them toward a better place to "go."

The biggest problem in SF is space. There is no place to put them, big enough to house them all. Even places like the Presidio or Ft. Mason couldn't begin to touch it, and they wouldn't be able to add enough facilities to address the mental health need. So it's not just about money, SF throws buckets of money at the homeless issue.

I'm totally for helping to mitigate the homeless issue. I spend every day of my working life getting people into housing, many who are homeless or would be and I rent my personal rental to agencies (at under market value) to help. But it's such a complicated situation that is getting bigger each day there is no easy solution. The town I live in now has a major problem, and I directly work with agencies every day to help solve it. It is not simple, and one of the biggest issues is, believe it or not, many of the homeless don't WANT to follow the rules they have to follow to live in homes.

And the city isn't covered in shit. I no longer work or live there, but I go there a lot and rarely see shit in the places most people go. Hit up the Tenderloin, though, and you might find some crap. Or head down an alley.
