I won't go into potential further details about this, but I think the situation is at least as much a standard linguistics thing as anything related to not wanting to be identified as from any particular American area. The same 'second person plural' usage was already starting to disappear from the Spanish language forty or so years ago. But there was definitely a 'y'all' pronoun version before then. ( :
