True. I could have switched they and them to it. I didn't think of "it."

It was a tiger. Richard Parker. In the story "The Life of Pi" and RP is referred to as "he" through the whole story. Kiddo wanted to separate the pronouns he was using for Richard Parker and Pi to avoid confusion, but I felt that was lazy, and he could just rewrite the sentence so it's not confusing using the correct pronouns.

but yeah, I think I should tell him he can use "it" if he feels strongly about it. Good suggestion.

English needs a gender neutral pronoun that is better than "it" because I feel like that implies an object not something sentient (could be my own bias).

I have always liked "zee" for the singular. I know it's used in common language but not academia (last I was in academia).
