    If you do ever get adventurous and want to finish unpainted wood yourself....

    Husband is a woodworker and has made quite a number of toys for nieces and nephews as gifts over the years as babies/toddlers (usually a set of blocks in box with the kids name on it) - and he typically uses either Linseed oil or milk paint which are both non-toxic and safe for teething.
