One of my least favorite things in the world is when people ask how you're doing just to inject some completely unwarranted criticisms into the conversation. Shit like, "What are you doing for work?"

When I ask that question and someone gives me an answer I'm just supportive, like, "Oh that's cool I'm happy for you."

I can't stand when people come out of left field with shit like, "Are you sure that's what you want to be doing? Make sure you do x, y, z. That's a difficult field to work in, most people quit. My friend can get you a job doing this, I think that might be better for you." I swear to God it's all disguised as care and concern when in reality people just obsess over others' life choices...

"What do you do in your free time?"

"Oh, I make music."

"Nobody ever gets famous making music, the likelihood that you will ever get famous is really low."

"Well, believe it or not, I don't want to be famous. I do it because I love it. And I'm actually making a living off of it and very happy."

"Well can I hear some of your stuff?"

"Sure."

Someone who has never made music before in their life: "I think it would sound better if you did this, this and this. You used too much of this, this and this."

"Actually I love the way it sounds, and I make it for myself. Why don't you just try to enjoy it for what it is and be happy for me? If you don't like it that sounds like a personal problem."

"Yeah, but if you ever want to be successful and famous doing it then you might want to take my advice."

"But I don't want to be famous. And I already have achieved a modicum of success. And I have a job. And I'm happy."

Shit is just so weird to me, man. When someone shows me something they made or tell me about something they have going on in their life I'm either happy for them or keep it to myself unless they explicitly ask me for advice. I will never understand people who feel the need to inject their criticisms and opinions to things that THEY inquired about. Maybe they need it for their ego or something. But like I'm neurotic and even if I am doing really well for myself things like that plant a seed in my head that really can throw me off course and mess with me, so it's funny that people who say they care about you and are your friends are comfortable doing that.

Rant over. Am I crazy? I just think it's funny that I could totally pick apart peoples' lives like that but choose not to, especially the people who offer these unwarranted criticisms. Maybe they are just projecting.

I learned a long time ago if you pursue any career avenue that is perceived as not a real job people get offended and act like you will end up depressed and offing yourself unless you follow 57 steps exactly.

 

Yeah I understand that I have a very unorthodox career, but I have a feeling that no matter what I'm doing that those people would still have unwarranted criticisms to throw at me. It's like they can never just be happy for you, they have to feel like they are giving you life advice to "save you from yourself" or something. Really gets under my skin. If they were really concerned about me they would just leave it alone and not get under my skin like that, lol.

That or they want to have the satisfaction of thinking they gave you some sort of life-changing advice that saved your life. It's like they want you to come back and thank them on your knees for helping you out of your hopeless spiral that didn't even exist in the first place. Especially funny because when I was ACTUALLY not doing good these people were nowhere to be found. I think that says a lot about where their "advice" is coming from.

 

Best advice I can tell you is if someone cannot be behind what you are doing screw em. "People" in general are only self serving. Individuals we have true connections with along the way are different but society will kick the shit out of you any time it can. Just do what you want to do and people that are true friends will be with you along the way.

 

Yeah, I get better every day at getting away from people who can't just be happy for me. Like I said I'm SUPER neurotic so like I obsess over things like that and it's really difficult. Definitely one of my worst traits.

 

It comes from selfishness, the I don't want them not having to work or doing better than me mindset tons of people have. Hell some people have disdain for just pursuing something you enjoy.

 

I think they low key know that they are planting a seed. Because if I was any less neurotic I would just walk away from it and surgically remove those people from my life unless they start just being happy for me, but instead I obsess over it for no reason. Lame.
