Well yeah it might be 100 years on today's super computer but in 10 years you could prob break it in under a year.

Let's say you're using a 128-bit AES cipher. The number of possible keys with 128 bits is 2 raised to the power of 128, or 3.4x1038, or 340 undecillion. Assuming no information on the nature of the key is available (such as the fact that the owner likes to use his or her children's birthdays), a code-breaking attempt would require testing each possible key until one was found that worked.

Assuming that enough computing power was amassed to test 1 trillion keys per second, testing all possible keys would take 10.79 quintillion years. This is about 785 million times the age of the visible universe (13.75 billion years)

    https://www.computerworld.com/article/2550008/security0/the-clock-is-ticking-for-encryption.html

Until quantum computing is a reality, symmetric encryption algorithms will not be broken unless you get stupidly lucky and manage to hit the right combination in one of the early tries.

Once we have working quantum computers that changes, but for now nobody has the time or resources.

They could have also agreed to help the Feds on the condition that they played along with the public fight

I don't know shit about the technical aspects of encryption but it seems like anyone with billions of dollars of resources should be able to defeat any standard consumer level encryption. I'm assuming NSA et al were tired of doing it the hard way and thought they picked a good set of facts upon which to fight for a backdoor. Usually people are, and have been, willing to go along with shit when it's positioned as fighting against terrorists.

Edit - the people above probably prove me wrong

The flaw with that assumption is "assuming that no information on the nature of the key is available."
