Uh...really, cause I've added more RAM in every laptop I've ever had and added SSDs and such. The laptop I have now has capacity for 32 gb and I could add another SSD or HDD on top of the SSD already in there.

I think it's more common now than it was in the past to be able to get a laptop that you can futz with.

You can't upgrade CPU/GPU easily, can you? Because imo those are more important than pure RAM and hard drive space.

 

Smaller form factor requires custom motherboards. They are designed for the body they have. Desktops are just big boxes you stuff shit in.

A lot of laptops have soldered on ram these days. Not all obviously.. but in the price range that he would be looking in I would expect to see a lot of it.

And a laptop with an upgradable GPU / CPU is extremely rare

I beg to differ, for turking anyway.

 

I have added RAM, replaced the battery and upgraded the HDD to solid state on my 2009 Macbook Pro. However the processor isn't upgradeable.

I'm to the point where Apple doesn't support the latest operating system on it. Really thinking I'm gonna upgrade very soon.

 

Those have always been changeable but upgrading say... the video card or the processor is damn near impossible.

 

I mean, I'm happy with my gpu and such and I picked out the laptop I did because I could futz with it a bit. I'm planning on building a desktop in next year or so, but I travel a lot with work so a laptop was kinda needed. I wasn't saying a laptop is AS customizable, cause dur, I'm just saying you have some options is all. When I looked for my laptop, I wanted something I could beef up a bit and something I knew would run multiple monitors/my basic Grinch games.
