You're onto something there. The problem with the HDD is that it's an HDD.

An SSD will help with hibernate/sleep/boot cycles, and it will play along as "pretend RAM" a lot better than an HDD does.

Doesn't sleep save to ram and keep it powered and hibernate save to the HDD? If I understand it correctly that is why for most setups waking up from sleep is basically instant.

 

I'm not a professional IT to know for sure, I know enough to be confusing to non-geeks. But that sounds about right.

That's the idea in theory, yeah.

But sleep, itself, still often involves some drive access, plus a lot of people say "sleep" to refer to both "sleep" and "hibernate". When you do tech support, you can't always trust that people are describing the issue accurately, and one of the common issues is a disagreement on (or misunderstanding of) terms.

This is correct, though some SSDs go into a low power mode and dodge the RAM during hibernation.

 

It might also be going into hybrid sleep if that isn't disabled.
