AMD has been ahead of intel in high end sales (not enterprise ... that shit is controlled by contracts) since around August.

I haven't seen more recent sales numbers actually been released so this is the best that we have.

I think AMD's whole concept for the Threadripper was inspired by their crypto success.

Since AMD cards are significantly more performant than nVidia's in mining most cryptocurrencies, they're taking their massively-parallel GPUs and saying to themselves, "What if we released some CPUs that were basically like GPUs?"

AMD CPUs have been optimized for multi-threaded performance rather than single-thread performance for quite some time, but now they're really doubling down on it.
