Sorry man, I don't fancy myself important enough to get to judge who deserves what resources this community can provide.

Its the whole "don't share MY batches" thing. Like, why are they someone's batches/HITs? Unless a person accepts & submits them, nameless/faceless Jo Dirt who is trying to feed his kids has just as much right to them as I do or anyone else.

I get it, its human nature. Have to look out for #1. We all want our group to be clothed & fed and to be a fat & happy "tribe" haha. But I'll do my level best to never put stuff behind an inaccessible wall or screen out people beyond some human decency standards (and maybe English fluency).

And I judge no one who has that batch mentality, just FWIW, I'd be the biggest hypocrite walking the planet if I did. Again, I was the biggest "GTFO MY WORK" dude when I hit that $100/day level or w/e it is in my write up. I never once considered the alternatives until I ended up running this place, I've been downright shocked at some of the stories folks have been kind enough to share about the how/why/whos of their Turk story or whatever. Its simply not my, or this website's, place to make those kind of calls on who gets fed and who doesn't.

From what I've seen though, you get 3,800 HITs/day on mTurk and then you gotta go do something else. Its going to be a very long time before anyone can actually negatively impact my earnings without them changing that stupid rule. So if anyone is worried about getting more by taking it away from someone else, they're missing great areas of self improvement / personal achievement moments.

Out of curiosity, since 3800 seems like such an arbitrary number, does anyone know why it was set up that way?

I get where you're coming from, I really do, but you're helping me prove my point. The people like @NBadger and @gurlondrums etc etc etc are the ones taking time out of their day to help the people to which I'm referring. There are a lot of legitimately good people in this community, but they're not the ones asking for help, leeching, etc. Scripters have put in a significant amount of time helping the community, at times cannibalizing their own earnings, and the only "thank you"s they get are complaints and bug reports. You know better than most what I'm talking about here, because you touched on it above with the landscape of "free userscripts" that have spoiled the community. It's the same thing as people having no problem dropping $1000 on a new phone but not willing to pay 99 cents for an app.

There are people that get warm and fuzzies just from helping others, and I've been known to dip my toe back in that pool too. It's just that now, when a 80k+ batch of A9s drop, my first priority is not making sure the community has a working script, because chances are it's not going to be worth it in the end.

I don't think things would change for most people if they doubled the amount of hits that you could do in a day.

I have never even done 1000 HITs in a day. 3800 would literally kill me.

And like @ChrisTurk has alluded to in the past when he's used it to defend jQuery, a lot of scripting lessons aren't really relevant to mTurk directly.

There's a lot of stuff regular courses teach that you don't need to learn,
there's some stuff you need to know more than the average web developer doesn't (i.e., a wider variety and deeper understanding of CSS selectors),
and there's some stuff that's fairly unique to mTurk script writing that you need to learn, like how Tampermonkey's meta directives work, or common structures for mTurk pages and navigation.

My group's ultimate purpose is to be a spawning ground for mTurk script writers, but I haven't gotten to finishing my courses yet. Part of my procrastination was that I wanted to have a wider portfolio and be more set in my style before bothering to teach. I have a fairly extensive programming background, but I've only been doing Javascript in particular for less than a year.

This is me whenever the forum is burning to the ground and Chris has to do extra admin-ing. "Hey dude you probably lost like $20 worth of work for this."

Which, actually, I haven't had to do in awhile because things have been tame. Wtf dudes, start throwing shit.

You kind of do ( i mean it's not about you being a judge or important) because you just posted that you think free scripts are leading somewhere... I mean when a higher-talented Turker tells me something I am grateful... but that doesn't usually happen because 10 other people have asked him for help already and I just read the forums. RTFM.

So I'm not a judge of who deserves what, that wasn't the point. The point that half-a-dozen people are saying and you are saying is that you're going to have to do some thinking on your own and at base level... that is gatekeeping. You're going to have to put thought into where you want to earn and how much brain-power you're going to put into it. I want to be somewhere far above brain-dead but below autistic hermitage.

Oh whoops, I was referring to them as examples of people who legit came out of no where, not really knowing shit about the platform, but now they're literal pillars of this community. And eventually they'll leave/graduate out and be replaced by the next batch like @knottypiper etc etc. That's what I'm saying is a lot of folks come through learning/asking questions but end up putting back in more than they got out.
Oh.. I make it a point to not actually read the first few pages in the morning for my own health.. I just noticed we're usually behind in posts until the 8-9AM mark haha.
Ah, gotcha, when you said gate-keeping I thought you meant like how TN functions where their entire forum is "hidden" and you have to somehow "prove" yourself to get in. My bad haha.
Its created a Pavlovian response.. I see people getting fiesty and go all :emoji_money_mouth::emoji_money_mouth::emoji_money_mouth:

There's a handful of regular posters here that I know are in my group only because they mention it to me, but I keep that private since it's sensitive info IMO. If people wanted to interact here under their real name and photo, they would've just posted those here.

But it's funny to me when someone has to explain to me the context of our prior conversation because I don't recognize someone's totally-different identity. People even seem to have a different writing personality when they're no longer under the guise of a pseudonym and an avatar.
