I was arrested at 18 in California for not having an ID. I lost my purse Friday morning, I went out with friends Friday night, we were just hanging around a lookout point by the sea in San Pedro, I didn't have an ID. They let us go but not before harassing us for quite a while. The next night, Saturday, I was riding in my boyfriend's car when we got pulled over by the same cops in the same area (duh, we lived there). Not speeding or drunk or anything and they arrested me for not having ID. I wasn't belligerent or anything. Just a cute young girl in a miniskirt cruising on the weekend and they were abusing their power, so I have an issue with the idea of arresting people because they might be an escaped convict or whatever.

An officer shouldn't be able to walk up to random people on the street and to see an ID.

That being said, if the police are investigating a crime, you should make some effort to cooperate. This guy's case might have been a lot better had he not decided to act like a total ass.
