Back when I had more disposable income, I bought a pair of sennheisers and will cry like a Grinch when they die because I won't be able to replace them.

I use AKG K702s most of the time because they're a bit more clinical than Senns, which was important when I was working on a mix.

But the difference is pretty minor. They're really similar.

 

They also are pretty cheap for pro headphones since they swapped up to PRC manufacturing:

I have semi-open backed too, and decent ear buds with passive noise cancelling. I just have shoddy noise cancelling so I can concentrate when Matt is howling and I'm trying to concentrate sans music.

IMO just get fully-open headphones if you care about audio quality, and fully closed if you're trying to avoid having your headphone audio bleed into a recording or have people around you hear your audio.
