Has no history of paying for projects on Upwork, and right off the bat, they want you to remove the demo banner for a theme that they refused to pay for.

And some people have the nerve to say that mTurk is shady. Lol.

 

@ChrisTurk I'm starting to see why Upwork seems to have more web development jobs than expected for a site that most conceptualize as a freelancing site for writers:

I got one job on upwork (and even though they paid me, they never rated my work so I don't have a way to be seen). Everyone else I get want to try to scam me.

 

I had a great client, so I was paid, bonused, and received a glowing review.

But in my years of freelancing, I've had terrible clients, amazing ones, and everywhere else on the spectrum, so I can relate to having a mediocre experience. It's like throwing a dart at a HIT on mTurk without having any past experience with the requester and without being able to consult TO, TV, any forums, etc. You often have no idea what you're getting when you freelance.

I've had a moody client when I was mixing music who would tell me how much he loved a render, then he'd come back within the next day with some suggested edits, and in the day after that, he'd change his mind again and decide that he loved the original render again. I learned to always let him have a cool-down period after he offered feedback in order to see how stable that feedback would end up being before actually committing to his requested changes.

Unclear requirements are the worst when you're doing freelance work, because you can be highly skilled and put in a lot of focused work that doesn't end up satisfying the client if they don't know what it is that they actually want. And "clients not knowing quite what they want" is incredibly common, so you eventually learn to coax out what people really want out of their projects. Sometimes (especially in the music domain) it can get pretty philosophical.
