You are a paid Artist. I may or may not (not) consider most Rap 'art', but by god you are getting paid to make music in front of 30 people. You have just won The Lottery of Mankind.

 

lots of people talk about what they do on here. I don't get why mine rustled you so much. between posting on here and mturkgrind over the last 3 years i've never mentioned it before. I genuinely felt weird listening to rap audio kites today. wasn't a humble brag. i'll just cut it here and say I understand it sounds annoying when someone posts about being in music and that i believe you when you say you thought it sounded pretentious.

 

Back when I made beats and offered recording/mixing/mastering for rappers, I wish I could've convinced more of my clients that this is the most lucrative income stream for small-time unknown artists.

So many unknown rappers don't want to do live shows and just try to sell recorded music.

And because this is getting tougher and tougher (streaming pays out almost nothing, and digital recorded music sales are down across the board), a lot of them ended up falling off. And them falling off hurt my bottom line, because rappers that get discouraged and stop making music will either quit or blame someone other than themselves in ego-defense (i.e., me) for their failure to reach their goals.

I had to keep re-marketing myself over, and over, and over when I was mixing/mastering for a living, simply because the turnover was so high. And although it would've been much more profitable for turnover to be lower, at least all of the practice gave me a ton of marketing experience.

totally. the little engineering work I do is littered with people saying "this one has to make a huge splash because I want it on the radio" and I scramble to find my "huge splash for radio" plug-in.

 

I hear ya. It was tough. I had to keep taking breaks to stretch my shoulders and wrists and it was sooo hard to get back to work after walking around for a minute.
