    How did anyone decide this would be a good place to settle? Maybe to summer in cause it looks like it averages in the 70's during the summer which might be nice but damn I can't imagine what the early settlers were thinking....or how they even survived their first winter in the area.

    They were thinking that when the Cossacks came and started poking their children in the eyes with bayonettes, they better settle where the Tsar/Stalin said they should settle, regardless of whether there was a plague of bugs in summer or sub-deep-space freezing in winter.

    The Herzog documentary called Happy People: A Year in the Taiga is a really great peek into that world. I think remote villages and live-off-the-land communities are so awesome to read and learn about, and sometimes I play on Google Earth to find really small, obscure locations then I research it for hours to learn about it. This doesn't really answer any of your questions but I think it's a fascinating topic.
