I find that most people these days just let the school system handle all that. They're too busy working to raise their kids so they shift responsibility onto the schools, television, and the Internet.

I totally agree. If you are too strict they will do everything behind your back and just rebel. My kids had friends who were sheltered and had helicopter parents and then they those kids went to college and went absolutely crazy. Give them guidance and try and trust them.

 

Tell 'em all to go to a uni with a dorm and watch the eighteen-year-old freshmen going off the walls because they're finally free of their parents' supervision and feel the need to do EVERYTHING they couldn't manage to do earlier to horrifying excess.

We straight up had like five kids die of alcohol poisoning my freshman year. TWO of my college roommates literally moved into the dorm to have sex without getting caught. Meanwhile those of us with more laid-back parents or who had studied abroad or who had at any point been out from under their supervision for any reason were just... "yeah, beer and sex exists, whatever."

 

I just don't understand that honestly. I put in too much work pushing her out of my body to let someone else mess her up.

 

I remember fondly when my dad took me to get on the pill when I was about 17 ( he did the same with my sister at 16). He knew he could only do so much when it came to me and the college boyfriend I had. He wouldn’t even let me be in a room with the door closed with him but he wasn’t friggen stupid.

As soon as I was alone with the nurse, I blurted out that I had in fact already been on it for 3 months and she was super nice, had the doc prescribe me the same stuff I was already on, and my dad felt very responsible while all the nurses patted him on the back for being a responsible dad.

I told him years later and he was both pissed I didn’t just ask him to take me to the doctor before then on my own, and relieved AF I was responsible about things.

He still tried to enforce odd rules but we both knew the reality of things.

He also advised me that if I felt nervous buying just condoms, throw in a few other items and go to a pharmacy just for that one thing and get everything else at another place. I didn’t really have an issue with that but I appreciate that as a single dad, he was willing to have some super awkward convos with me.

Dude. I was an RA, and there was literally a freshman kid who chugged a bottle of liquor and blew a .67 ON MOVE IN DAY.

He did not come back after that.

That was a holy shit moment for me.

 

The one with Rosemarie Dewitt? That was pretty messed up.

Since I work at a school, I talk to quite a few professors and they've said the last 10 years that they have a lot more parents talk to them and they have to explain that college isn't grade school and they can't, and also won't, talk to them about an adult's grades. The helicopter parent shit has gotten out of hand.

 

She may be a wild kid, you don't know. But if something happened and she was car jacked, abducted or taken against her will, it might save her life having that thing on her car, you never know these days.

Also, things aren't like they were 20 years ago...and totally not innocent like they were when I was a teen.
