It is worth noting that uber tracks users almost as much as facebook does... they are a shitty company.

 

I don't follow these things exceptionally closely, but doesn't this includ data from people who didn't even have a Facebook?

They were downloading/monitoring phone calls & SMS messages for everyone who installed their app (and mind you, the app is pre-installed on phones as well even w/o an account). So even if you called/texted someone who happened to use FB, you could lose your data for it.

To be fair to the consumers, the culture we have of basically including legalese in end user agreements in which 95% go completely unread is something we should probably be working towards regulating. You shouldn't have to have experience reading legal documents to use a common program.

App install permissions are specifically not written in legalese. I'm not sure how you could be on the Internet and not have realized that pretty much everyone wants to sell you advertisements, though.

 

From what I understand, it was a TOS violation because the data was collected for one thing, then sold to another entity for something else. FB wasn't necessarily the culprit though. People are also finding out that Cambridge Analytica employees discussed how they use bribes and blackmail tactics for political opponents/opponents of their clients.
