    Catholics tend to put more emphasis on it, but the protestant church I grew up in had a Good Friday evening service every year. I wouldn't expect many people to take the day off though.

    Yeah, it's a Christian holiday. Also, Stock market is closed. And a ton of people request the day off, because it's the Friday before a major holiday for many and because the majority of schools are closed today so their kids are home. It's a big vacation week/weekend.
