Random batches are unlikely to pay that well. Well paid stuff doesn't sit around. Decent pay stuff sits around longer, but not for any substantial amount of time. Pay attention to the daily thread, build your requester list and you'll start learning who the better requesters are and which batches are good to do. In the meantime, do surveys and you'll still earn while you learn the lay of the land, learn how to use the different resources if you haven't already. And keep your eyes open for quals, as many of the best paying batches are qual'd.

Check TO and TV for requesters you aren't familiar with to see if they are safe to do. When you're starting out, it's easy to try a requester that is reject happy and not know it ahead of time and it'll unnecessarily set you back.
