    It's also basically my favorite sub-genre. The right mix of lighthearted and seriousness is what made the staple fantasy series so popular, in my mind.

    You can manage to make it relatable, and unbelievable at the same time, in that way.

    Harry Potter, The Hobbit, The Chronicles of the Place that Sounds like my Name, things of that nature.

    The Series of Unfortunate Events books, while much more gloom about it, are in the same vein to me.

    It's been 30-40 years since I read it... don't specifically recall thinking it was especially whimsical. Monty Python's version was full of whimsy.

    You are absolutely correct. Of course there are elements of whimsy in The Hobbit -- it would be difficult, if not impossible, to write about such beings without it. But as far describing the overall tone of the book as whimsical, we're going to have to agree to disagree.
