Those communities that grow too large end up with nothing but the two ends of the spectrum rising to the top. They lose the nuance you get with smaller groups. Plus, reading is a bit more intimate and personal than other mediums, so it's hard to find your niche in larger communities that naturally neuter specifics and prefer generalizations as things get voted up.

I usually just saunter over to the Liberal Arts buildings on the campus I work at with some coffees and ask people what they're reading.

Anyways, the Pulitzer Prize list for novels is always a decent place to find good books. I kept hearing stuff about Michael Chabon and thought he was just some trendy, easily digestible writer for the masses until I picked up his book that won a Pulitzer and was blown away. Don't know why I waited so long to read one of his novels. I've read over a dozen books that won the prize and don't think I've been disappointing yet.
