I'm a high school dropout and make over $60k/y forget about university

 

If a parent is smart they're making sure their children learn German so they can take advantage of free tuition at actual research institutions (community colleges only work for two years, after all) and have an absurdly low cost of living for an industrialized country.

 

I must be an entitled shit, I wouldn't flip burgers for 11 these days, I left fast food 8 years ago never looking back and that was 11 then

 

$11 will be the min wage soon here anyways

 

Compared to some shit jobs I've worked in an office, that's a dream (assuming its not a shit corporate job too)

 

That's a good point, the co-founder of turkopticon works for a German company and I had no idea it was a prevalent thing. Before I knew this I would think Mandarin or Spansh to be the most effective use of time

 

holy shit I think it's like $15 or 16 here in cali. (the last time I lived/worked in Wisconsin min wage was $5.80/h)

 

As a native English speaker you have to think about priorities. Do you want an education? German. Do you already have an education and want to get into business or logistics in emerging economies? Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic. Maybe French soon if Africa gets more investment.

In all seriousness, and this is not a political statement. There is no reason why a person who is willing to give up 40 hours a week to work for someone else, should not be paid a livable wage. It is terrible that people have work to stay poor. All you have to do is search jobs on craigslist and see a thousand posts a day that pay 10$ an hour and act like they are doing you a favor. Minimum wage needs to be 15-20.

 

Manufacturing is fleeing mandarinland and tech seems to be fleeing as well.

If you want to learn it to learn, go for it.

I wouldn't do it to get ahead in business though.

Only a matter of time before China owns the US. Look how much of the US deficit is from Chinese creditors. May as well learn to speak the language of our new overlords.

 

Ok. Pay attention to the next 1 to 4 years of the capitalist cycle as opposed to long term trends and see if that makes you seem smarter. 1 Billion mandarin speakers aren't going to magically die all at once.
