~8 is fine to play outside by themselves, they understand stranger danger at that age, and if they aren't playing alone, that's perfectly fine. We were even allowed to ride our bikes all the way to the stop sign at that age.

You were?? I wasn't allowed down to the stop sign until at least 10. I couldn't ride my bike to the end of the street to my friend's house until 12 and I had to call my mom as soon as I got there. The street was about 4 stop signs long but when I see how short the road is now, I think it's crazy.
Although, I was chased by a car full of teens yelling dirty words at me so I guess I understood. I still thought I was invincible and felt like she was being overprotective.

My mom used to tell me to wear a helmet. Fuck that. I'm no nerd. I did end up having to get stitches on my face and staples on my scalp though... so maybe she was right. Nah. I'm no nerd.

 

The very first time I rode a bike when I was like 4, I got chased by an unchained rottweiler all the way down the street. My mom beat the everloving shit out of that dog with her purse. Our street was relatively isolated, though, only like 4 houses and mostly wooded.
