    Okay so only if you are representing two words do you ever, ever use an apostrophe. "It's" = "It is." Two words. So think of the apostrophe as dividing the two.

    If it's your possession, meaning it's a part of you, it's "its." One word, because it is your precious and no other's.

    it's always means "it is"
    you don't put an apostrophe in his or hers, so you don't in its.

    I've always just remembered - our, his, her - none of that shit has apostrophes therefore its doesn't have one either.

    I think the main thing is that you confused the rule for possessives for a noun with possessives for a pronoun. You may have been taught correctly but misunderstood. That's very common and is the main reason people get its and it's mixed up.
