    ....no, it's basically what @ThisPoorGuy linked to, and also the willingness of stores to eat some of the loss on certain items in order to entice folks to spend more. It's a mix of that and using things they likely couldn't sell, not because it's unsafe, but that people are so picky about age and looks with food, stores even chuck ugly looking fruit and veggies that some stores use to make fruit and veggie juices and fruit salads, etc.

    I used to work in the hot foods department of a grocery store. One time our regional warehouse was way overstocked on rotisserie chickens and had to get rid of them. We were selling them for 2.50 for about a week. We sold a lot of chickens....A lot.
