    In dwarf fortress, as you build your fort and it gets more complex, more inhabitants, more trash, more layers dug out, more open tiles to pathfind through, you inevitably run into the FPS problem.... that being, even the most state of the art modern desktop system will grind down to unplayable FPS (Frames per sec) levels without some careful thinking about your design

    That's what forgotten beasts are for... clears up the FPS pretty quickly depending on how it goes.

    Particularly apropos to this forum, judging by avatars, I'll mention the "catsplosion". Normally it is good to have a couple kitties in your fort to keep vermin under control. But let them breed with reckless abandon, and your fort will grind to a halt as a trillion cats think a trillion thoughts about which of the trillion paths are A* optimal to get to the trillion vermin they could be hunting.....

    It's an older game on a pretty old engine so it's poorly optimized. I haven't checked recently but I think it was brought up and the developer said it would be impossible or too hard (can't remember which). Eventually, the game will just drag to nothing because the history of the world is constantly simulated outside your fort too.
