Matt's momma never taught him good manners, he's basically an untrained dog who doesn't mean to pee on the carpet but was never taught not to, and so he constantly says the dumbest crap possible to me without thinking it thru. Over the years, he's at least learned to self reflect when he says something particularly stupid and other times, he expresses confusion to me cause "he was just being accurate!"

Fortunately my kid is learning to think before he speaks, but he seemed to come by this naturally after one or two gaffes.

His pa, tho, well...sometimes he could just be a jerk, lol.

Though I did learn that both of their brains work VERY LITERALLY so if they are not blurting out something stupid that's some effort on their parts.

An example of their literal brain: When my kiddo was a wee one I told him, like many parents do, that he will love school when he goes and won't he be excited to learn how to read??? (which did excite him)

He came home from his first day of Kindy and when I asked him about how school went he replied, "Fine. But I don't know how to read."

I laughed and said of course not, that'll take years!!!

When I related this story to his father his father informed me that OF COURSE he expected to learn to read on his first day as those were the parameters I set out: "If you go to school, you'll learn to read." He went to school. He cannot read. I did not define how long he needed to go to school to learn to read, so his expectation was totally valid.

At that moment I said to my ex, "Oh. Dear. Is that how your brain works? If so I owe you apologies for like five years of confusing the hell out of you because I assumed you understood what I meant. This explains SO MUCH about our relationship!!!!"
