I have had a lot of success doing this and it is usually just a small mistake and they apologize. Sometimes they ignore me and I will email the IRB at their university and I have yet to have an American based IRB not make things right. Just be polite and even if the professor refuses to fix it, the IRB usually will (including a California school that sent me a $2 check in the mail, because the professor still refused to do their job after being contacted by the IRB).

I've only contacted someone once (I've had other bonuses not paid but it wasn't worth my time to follow up) and it was a script error, which they apologized for then got me the bonus.
