The Studio LT is a solid base if he is interested in using it as a mod platform, but realistically it needs a lot of work to be playable. For somebody learning, out of the factory it would be pretty frustrating. You're looking at new tuners, pickups, and possibly a bridge, and a trip to a luthier or a guitar store to get the action adjusted, since it comes ridiculously high from the factory.

If you're not married to an Epiphone, and for something in a similar price range, I'd recommend looking at a Harley Benton SC-550. It's a Les Paul standard clone with more of an Ibanez style neck, and they're set up from the factory at a level I'd be comfortable handing to a student with no adjustments.
