When we moved into a house that had a flea problem from the previous folks, we had to get flea traps on top of spraying the whole place with treatment/ carpet powder for it and constantly vacuuming up. With the shitty life cycle of fleas, you're probably killing adult ones but the baby ones/eggs. We had to repeatedly treat everything for awhile :/ They also sell the flea pill, which is good for getting any fleas off the pets in hours. If it isn't getting better, you might wanna call a pest control place if it comes to that. Better to let someone else rid your house of an invasion than get sick!

i (thankfully) haven't had much experience with fleas, but helped a friend purge her house of them - we scrubbed carpets and furniture with baking soda (i think you can also use salt, or food grade diatomaceous earth) then vacuumed. then dish soap washed all the other things. i think they also hate rosemary? i'm so sorry you're dealing with this, i hope it goes away quickly and doesn't cause more issues. you're not wrong for owning pets because of it!

and for your reaction - if benedryl messes you up (it does me - i'm like a frickin' toddler with it, i knock out hard) you can get straight up antihistamine from a health food store (i like the brand D-Hist, but it's expensive as heck). i'm pretty sure there's no limit to how much you can take and it doesn't make me drowsy. i love tea tree oil cream for skin issues, but be careful because it's super toxic to cats - i've read horror stories of people having it in their diffusers and cats getting sick from it being in the air. it should be fine on your skin, as long as kitty isn't snuggling up on you.
