I find the interviewing process to be quite convoluted. It is frowned upon as a potential employee to ask about money and compensation upfront. That is the ONLY reason we are applying to work here, you know? But if you were to be upfront about it, they would probably not hire you and just hire someone else who doesn't want to put up a fight.

That is almost exactly what is going on with me right now. I'm on contract with this publishing company and the client I was hired on to deal with is moving everyone off their current project, so it was basically move to the new project or perish. What's great is they didn't tell anyone, just forced us into a forced week+ of vacay with supposed "server problems." Then come Monday I find 70% of my peers have been fired or moved. I saw it coming, but just thought it was totally BS the way they handled themselves and now they are trying to pacify me by offering me an extra dollar an hour which is really 0 change to my current rate. On one hand, they extended my contract way past the 3 months I was brought on for, on the other hand the whole thing has been a clusterfuck. I get a decent amount of writing contracts without this job but the consistency of my paycheck has been a nice addition to my normal shiz. I'm pushing for less hours in the offices with the change in project though, so that would be super cool.

In the eight years I've worked at my current job I got a raise two of those years, got two raises in one of those years, got no raise 3 of those years because there was, "no money in the budget" but here's a shitty $500 bonus that will get eaten in taxes, and then after 6 years got sold off to a staffing agency with a pay cut AND lost 80% of my benefits. I'll take a $1/hr raise lol.
