Having tcp-25 open wouldn't do much. You would need a relay server or a smtp server to do anything of use. Or you could send out your own messages via smtp but you could do that from any connection as long as the ISP doesn't block that it.

 

Well the general rule is: WIFI sucks. Other factors are channel interference, are you in an apartment with many other users or do you have multiple other devices on your WIFI? Things like Roku, appliances, phones, etc.

If possible always use a wired connection.

If you are 12 feet away on a normal basis it's a lot easier to pick up a cheap 20 foot lan cable and plug it in while you're turking. If it's one of those modem/router all in one units they are total crap and should be replaced with your own separate modem and router posthaste.
