PP Depression is for sure something that is STILL not talked about enough. It's getting better, with people like Brooke Shields being so open about it and writing about it but it is something that needs to be more widely discussed and out in the open so moms who are struck with it don't feel ashamed or someone "less" than other moms. Because they're not. It's a real thing and is really hard to deal with!

It was bad enough that JH couldn't be alone with her and I feel comfortable. Mind you, I'm a PTSD patient and was in my first year of recovery when he was born. It was a rocky road. I almost filed for divorce, but she saught treatment and it's been better.

I'd have giggled harder if she'd be like "no. I didn't order Animal Crossing. That's for momma."

I am really glad she was able to get treatment and had support. Not an easy road, but so much harder when the mom won't admit to it or family won't "allow" it to be a thing. It can put the child in danger.

I hope the road for you guys is a lot less rocky in the future! Sounds like y'all have had more than your fair share with these types of struggles!

(I have a form of PTSD that came from, literally, holding my dead child so I can somewhat relate, but the death of a child is off in its own category from other struggles and PTSDs...I'll never, ever "recover". I just learned to build a life around it, if that makes sense?)

100% this. My wife had PP depression after our second and probably after our first too, but her grandmother also passed away about a month after our first was born, and her grandmother was basically her mom...so it was a little hard to tell what was influencing what there...

It's nasty. From the perspective of the partner, it's extremely hard to try to convince somebody in that position to actually go ask for help. She ended up getting prescribed a low dose anti-depressant for a few weeks and it snapped her out of it 100% night and day difference. But it was getting her to realize a) fork hormones, b) This wasn't normal and c) It's ok to ask for help and nobody is going to judge her.

But like....the last thing you want to tell somebody who's brain is all forked up because of hormones is that their brain is being forked up by hormones. That's a discussion that generally ends poorly in the best of circumstances...

We peaked when she snapped at me, I called her out on it, and she told me it was the new normal and I'd better get used to it.

She started therapy the next week after we had a long talk about how it wasn't right or fair for me or JH. It was a rocky road for sure. Part of the reason we aren't having a second. Also, because we're starting to get to that age where it would be dangerous to try for a second. (I'll be 40, she'll be 38).

The other two things that legit need to be talked about more when it comes to new moms/parents:

    1) If you don't breastfeed because it doesn't work for you, you're not some outcast who's kid is going to grow up to be a college dropout working at a fast food restaurant. The breast feeding mafia is insane. It wasn't working for my wife the first time, and instead of support, she got shamed by multiple sources both at the hospital and her doctor. If somebody says "Breast is best!" around me, I want to punch them in the face, honestly.

    -and-

    2) It's 100% normal if you don't feel immediately bonded to your kid. Some people do...some people take a little while. It's different for everyone and it doesn't make you a shitty mom if you don't look upon your screaming shriveled newborn and feel like somebody ripped the top off of your soul and poured love straight down into it.

OMFG. Half of Sar's issue was that her nipple didn't develop properly and JH wouldn't latch. If someone were to say Breast is best to me, I'm very likely to headbutt them. And we had that problem iwth the lactation aids at the hospital. She got so mad at me like the first night we were home because I made him a formula bottle because he wouldn't latch and worried about him. She felt like I didn't care enough to comfort her or something. I don't remember the whoel fight at this point.

Exactly. Stay out of other peoples business and let people do what works for them. Want to breast feed? GREAT! Want to formula feed? GREAT!

Want to feed them diet coke? Brb, looking up the local CPS office....
