Honest story time!
My Gran-in-law(rest her blessed soul) went to the hospital and left an entire bag of potatoes in the cabinet. No one knew. No one knew until it was well too late. It smelled so foul that no one was willing to clean it and they were talking about calling someone. I just manned up and had to scoop up soupy potato goop off the floor. The bag was full of gnats trying to to fly in my nose and mouth. I picked the bag up and it wasn't enough. They had fully gone. It stained the tile and grout. I had to hands and knees scrub the tile with bleach and a tooth brush.
