Super late to the party - but I love today's topic and I'm glad so many people shared their stories/struggles/etc. I don't think I caught all of them, but a big hug to everyone who shared. This stuff definitely isn't discussed openly enough

Spoiler: Late in the day so I'll just put me story in here so I don't disturb anyone's work

I've had depression and anxiety my whole life and I never had anyone to talk to about it. My mother is an addict - drinking and pills - and has borderline personality disorder. My whole life was pretty much my dad and I having to appease her. She tried to be more of a best friend/big sister to me than a mother, but also was quick to bully me and blame things on me. Earliest memory of have of this is her telling 12 year old me to get a nose job. She was drunk with her friend and they were laughing at me while I cried.

So dealing with all that, having to kind of raise myself and figure out my own problems never helped my depression or anxiety. My mom’s addiction stuff got way worse and and drunkenly drove a few years ago with the intent to kill herself. She told my dad in a cold voice at the hospital, “Sorry I didn’t finish the job”, with no emotion. He called me up crying that he didn’t know how much longer he could do this. He tried to get her into rehab, but she just came out worse every time. Meanwhile, his mother gets diagnosed with cancer and my mom STILL tries to make everything about her. He finally had enough and filed for divorce. He got the news of his mom’s death on a Sunday, and had to go battle my mom with divorce proceedings the next day, where she didn’t have an ounce of sympathy.

Anyway, I stopped talking to my mom back in December. My depression and anxiety has improved a LOT because I don’t have to worry about appeasing her anymore. I actually am getting to have a relationship with the rest of my family now that she cut me off from, and my dad and I are slowly building at the relationship that was always there - he’s the one who got me into art, computers, and gaming - but she was always so jealous of and kept destroying.

So I speak as someone who faces these issues and as someone raised by someone with them. We tried to help her, but she didn’t want to be helped. So this Sunday is gonna be a bit weird for me. It never really felt like I had much of a mother anyway, but it’s been really weird especially seeing all this Mother’s Day stuff this year now I’m ‘free’ of her. It’s a lot of mixed feelings.
