    yeah i'm speaking for people that are strictly self-employed (no w-2s). as long as you're getting enough withheld from your regular job, you shouldn't need to pay quarterly

    Eh I think that's a generation thing. Younger people can't imagine a world with technology lol. I could go back to living without cell phones and computers if they were suddenly gone. Wouldn't bother me.

    It's not that I'm saying I couldn't survive without a personal computer, It would be a Grinch but we did for thousands of years, I'm saying the society we have now with the large cities and concentrated populations requires some level of automation to function.

    Basically, the government wants you to pay over the course of the year instead of just getting a lump sum at tax time. The withholding from your regular job covers this normally and you just pay the difference if it wasn't enough or get a refund if it was too much when you file your taxes. If you're self-employed there's no withholding, so they want you to pay quarterly. Whether it matters for you or not will depend on whether your withholding from your regular job is enough to cover what you owe.
