I think what ended up happening in our case was that they put a cap on us, and I do A LOT of streaming, so I kept requesting a raised cap (which added $10 to the bill for an additional 50gb, and I went from a 250 cap to a 450). In November, they added more infrastructure to this area and began offering unlimited data for a flat $5/month. I jumped on that immediately, but they never took away the price we were paying for a much higher cap beforehand, so we were technically paying +$40 for a higher data cap, and then +$5 for unlimited data.

Hahahaha! I pay nearly $40 a month for 3mbps down (yes, 3, I didn't mistype 30 or anything) through frontier in rural hell. There are nice fast lines they spent a lot of time and energy laying a few YEARS ago a few blocks up at the highway, but they haven't done anything with them yet. There's another provider here that I could get wireless from ( as in, not DSL, not cable, the modem picks up a wireless signal bounced off of the water tower) that's $50 a month for like 6 down, I think.

I get sad when I can't make the monies everyone else here makes even when I'm doing the same things; then I remember my 3 is competing with their 100 and I'm not doing too bad comparatively.

 

Yeah, they also don't think about those who have issues that don't allow them to work. It's hard to get people who don't have any limitations to understand why anyone wouldn't just go out and get any job. There's a million reasons "real" jobs aren't going to work for people. Turking has actually helped me feel somewhat productive and that I have contributed something even though I have health issues. It's not just about the money, honestly.

Oh, I'm exactly the same. I was working at a fast-food restaurant while going to college for accounting. I obviously hated the job, and after 3 years I got really burnt out of accounting (fuck taxes). I started looking into ways of making an income online, or at least teaching myself a skill using online resources (we're sort of in the boon of online income and resources like Khan Academy, Udemy, Code Academy). I discovered Mturk. I learned the early ropes. I quit my job/school and dedicated time to it and it became a very good sole income for me. Now, I just recently fiiiinaly started learning JavaScript and jQuery.

Working 100% from home has been a dream come true in terms of your own hours, unlimited sick/vacation days, having more free time, etc. My girlfriend and I have agreed that when we move in together, I'll be the main stay-at-home person to manage things at home as long as I make at least $1500 a month online, which I've been able to do easily.

That was where I was when I started turking 2 years ago so I know the pain, about 6-8 months in I was able to upgrade from 3 to 10 then another few months and I went to 25 because luckily centurylink decided the apartment complexes here in town could get new lines installed but nowhere else. So if I move out of one of the three complexes in town, I get to go back to 5 my best choice. The woes of small town internet.
