In its usual meaning, "sometimes" indicates "not always."

It's still true though. If you always do something (like not eating cement), then by definition it's necessarily true that you also sometimes do it. No need to replace any words with similar phrases or do anything. It's a logical problem, really. Sometimes is a subset of always.

Here's another example: We have 10 balls. If all 10 balls are red, it's always the case that at least some of the 10 balls are red. If you say "some of the balls are red", it doesn't necessarily mean that not all are red, it just means at least some of them are red - logically it's a perfectly true statement. Humans, however, tend to infer from that statement that we're implying that not all of them are red. But that's not logically true, it's just something called conversational implicature - just how we interpret what people might be implying. Not necessarily a fallacy, but something close I guess, I dunno I'm not a linguist or whoever the fuck deals with this stuff. But nevertheless, logically speaking, if all 10 balls are red, it's always true that some of them are red.

If I said "only sometimes" or "only some" then it would be false. But as it stands, it's a true statement.

We cannot fix some dictionaries that don't clearly say "sometimes" can mean "always." We can email their editors but they won't change anything.

At least Wiktionary is community-edited, so maybe someone will want to try (start an "edit war") to improve on this:

    https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sometimes
If you read that to mean "but not always" always applying without exception, it doesn't admit that "sometimes" can mean "always."

Or you can interpret "but not always" as not always applying, thus allowing for the exception (not explicitly stated) that "sometimes" can mean "always."

So maybe that's fine as-is, and it's up to the reader to interpret it correctly. — Explicitly stating "sometimes can mean always" would make it extra-clear for even the dumbest of readers (like me), but not everything needs to be like that. Don't change it. Let it remain a little bit of a logic puzzle for the dumb ones like me.

And even if that Wiktionary entry is flawed, leave it. Not everything needs to be perfect. Dictionaries never are. Let them have flaws, as they always do.

Remember that time in school when your introductory calculus book had a treacherous typo, or a sneaky ambiguity, that caused you a half-hour of puzzlement ... until you realized that the point was wrong or ambiguous. You simply needed to think for yourself and figure it out. You mentioned it the next morning in class, and found out some other classmates had been confused about it too. The smart ones (like you) had readily figured it out. Some dumb-dumbs had not.

The world is full of ambiguities and edge-cases and all sorts of traps for the dumb-dumbs. The trick is to be smart, and figure things out. So please be smart, everybody. Don't be a dumb-dumb like me.

Oh stahp it. The fact that you're thinking this deeply about all of this is proof enough that you're anything but a "dumb-dumb," my man. ;)

As if on cue, a "some might mean all" interpretation ambiguity appeared as a puzzle point in a study I was participating in just now.
