Another day, another ambiguous study.

How important is X?
How important is X in relation to Y?

In this case, X is a popular thing that is important to many people, and particularly in relation to Y ... but not important to me, even in relation to Y.

The study presented dozens of questions like that, so, for consistency, I should either answer them all from the personal idiosyncratic perspective, or answer them all from the popular consensus perspective. Personal perspective was presumably correct; but, after answering dozens of questions in contradiction to general consensus, I wasn't sure if the researcher may have intended to evaluate our perception of the popular perspective.

I returned the study.

 

Too many requesters put out surveys without even considering that not all questions apply to all people or none of the answers apply.

I just did a survey that asked some questions about alcohol usage. How many times in the last 12 months did I have 4 or more drinks within a 2-hour span? ZERO! But, there was no zero option, so I had to answer 1-2 times! There were also several other questions that didn't apply to me, because I haven't had more than 2 or 3 drinks in one day/night/week in at least 10 years. If they had bothered to give me a spot at the end I would have told them. But now, I'm an occasional binge drinker who refuses to cut down on my drinking!

And at least 3 times in the last two weeks (and on many occasions prior) I did surveys that asked me questions about experiences with one product, and then on the next page, they're asking me questions about some completely different product!
