    I think I asked him about big places like that and he said they weren't as good as you might think. He listed really random places I wouldn't have expected to be the best places. I got obsessed and lurked the subreddit for dumpster diving for awhile after that.

    Aren't the big chain stores really anal about dumpster diving? To the point where some even lock their dumpsters? Something about lawsuits. I'd stick to smaller/locally owned places.

    They usually lock their shit unfortunately. Also in my state if there's a no trespassing sign up - you can't go in there, but if there isn't one - it's all fair game.

    Yup, that's what I've heard too. They don't throw out as much and even if they do, it's locked up and there's cameras. Some places don't care about you looting the dumpsters as long as you don't leave a mess and you're respectful.
