    This is what I'm talking about. I just hit refresh like fifty times in the past few minutes and didn't see this come up, and then I click on this and it says the hit is gone. Am I missing something?

    Why are you hitting refresh bro? The forum updates live without you needing to refresh. Also, are you using the panda? That's the only way you will catch most things.

    Writing HITs are criminally underpaid on mturk. From working freelance, my quote would start at something like .65/word, probably .75/word, for those blog post HITs. Anything with actual research is gonna be $1+/word.

    Get Mturksuite, overwatch and pandacrazy. Look up what a panda is (preview and accept) and tinker around for a bit and search for guides on all of the above. Ask some questions if needed.

    I think they would and I think we often do protest skilled underpaid work. Article writing being one of the first that comes to mind. There was also that $20 coding hit that no one on the forum would touch because it was way underpaid. Unskilled work doesn't bother me as much (though we all protest the $4/hr nonsense, so it's not like this is just limited to skilled).

    But design specifically is a pet peeve because while most people don't think they can BS coding, the creative world is flooded with people that really do believe that if you have access to PS you are therefore a graphic designer. And then you get shirts like the TN ones we were looking at earlier. Photography's also bad because you'll get people trying to get friends shoot their wedding photographs and then realizing oh, shoot, you really do need to know what you're doing and just owning a DSLR doesn't cut it.

    When I do freelance stuff, I usually quote based on time/effort. When I'm writing an article about like...trending spices this year, it's not going to be as $$ as when I'm copy editing a short story or when I'm ghost writing something. Don't even get me started on marketing/pr based crap, that just gets fussy. The project I'm working on right now is both horribly boring and super super complicated. So, that's fun. And to top it off, I'm trying to wrangle a bunch of junior copy editors and junior writers I don't normally deal with, who think they are all the second coming of Fitzgerald or some shit.

    The ability of anyone to go pick up a copy of photoshop for a few bucks a month has really screwed with that industry as well. There's a difference between being able to do graphic design work and being good at it. It's an art, just like any other medium.

    No, but if you got a transcriptionist foot pedal you'd probably be a hell of a lot closer to being a pro than a guy who downloaded photoshop would be to being a pro graphic designer. There's a hell of a lot less intangible stuff that goes into transcription than goes into creative arts. And I'm not trying to argue that transcription on mturk isn't underpaid too...because it is.

    The issue is that there's value in the intangibles. It's like...if you're getting married and you want to get photos taken of your wedding, you shouldn't pay your buddy Steve who just got a DSLR for Christmas a couple years ago and takes photos of his cat. You should pay Bob's Photography who trained for years, who put in the effort and has the experience to do the job right.

    I feel like the part of it that people have trouble grasping isn't that Steve can't take good photos or won't do a good job. I mean he might. Who knows? It's when people look at Bob and say "why should I hire him if Steve is going to do the exact same thing for $5 instead of $5000??" Because more than likely Bob is going to beat the pants off of steve. But there's this perception that photography/other creative arts is just a thing you can do with a tool, and if you charge too much you're just overcharging because anybody can do it. When that isn't true at all.
