Redirect his focus. That's the best way to teach him what you want him to do. Positive reinforcement works better.

If he's rooting around in the trash and you don't want him to do that, redirect his attention with a toy and lead him away from the trash. Reward him for following you and playing with the toy.

I had a learning toy like that years ago for my Eskie. Lemme tell ya, he was thrilled with himself when he realized he could open the velcro door and just dump the little toys out that way instead of actually working to get them.

Shelties are the best. Mine passed away almost two months ago at age 11. He was the best companion I've ever had. They're smart and definitely have their favorite toys.

I can't scroll by @gurlondrums avatar without feeling like I stumbled into the wrong website.

 

My Rottweiler can destroy any toy in 10 minutes flat, usually less. Unless of course she adopts it, then the toy will usually last a day or two before she rips it to shreds. The only thing that she hasn't damage one bit yet is the Kong extreme. Those things are made out of like industrial tire rubber or something.

 

I got that same duck because they were offering $10 back if you ordered it through Alexa. It was way too big for my little Kalli though so we gave it away. Made $6 profit though lol.
