They are mostly checks to compare with known things like shining a light through a cup and the angle that it should curve in and the seconds it takes for something to hit the ground. If anything doesn't match up with the known reality I am either in a lucid dream or under the influence of some drug.

Another thing is that I can compare the time it takes from thinking an action to doing it. The few times that I have been drunk I was able to indirectly control myself by compensating for the delay. The only reason that I have 'practice' with this though is from the drugs that I got prescribed during my childhood.
