All I've gotten in feedback there is either

It's very common for social start-ups to either have a closed invite-only beta, create a botnet, or create a bunch of fake accounts to make the place looking like it has some activity on it. Looks like they're opting for a half botnet, half turk activity base before they do a big launch.

These MAD Labs are sort of the same kind of thing but for a multimedia review site instead of a social food blog. But they CLAIM it's for a proof-of-concept for the actual site they want to launch.
