My dad had a beeper at work and I would call it from the payphone at the library to send him code numbers for if I wanted to stay late at school or something.

I got mine when I bought it for myself as adult. Previously, I had a phone with a slide out keyboard and was thrilled to have texting. I did have a first generation ipad I bought for myself though, that was cool and super handy on campus cause it meant leaving my laptop in my dorm room.
