Sometimes my external BD player feels as much as a relic of the past as a floppy drive was 10 years ago.

 

This is all really impressive. Like I said, I think people who archive things are super interesting, no matter what they're keeping. And this interest goes back to VHS/audiocassette days. There's a few things I recorded off TV back in the day that I'd love to still have. And then there are things that I wish I had recorded, just so I could see/hear them again.

I think I've taken for granted the fact that while, yes, a lot of things on the Internet are there forever, certain media can be scrubbed almost completely out of existence just like that. One recent example was a few mashups I heard a few years ago that I can't seem to find again. Admittedly, I haven't looked too hard for them, but these mashups were written about in a bunch of mainstream articles. And now I can't find a single one. Another one is an, erm, adult video that I quite enjoyed that disappeared for a while but luckily I did eventually find it and made damn sure I got a copy of that downloaded.

Ultimately, though, I personally treat data like physical items: will I ever use it? Do I need to keep it around? I think I'll come around eventually, though, especially once I'm in a better situation to set up a Plex server. Or once I start feeling like certain things won't be around forever.
