As it was described to me, it died out when the empire decided to adopt Christianity as its official religion, and scribes needed some extra tools to reduce the error rate in manually transcribing copies of the Bible.

So they introduced spaces, punctuation, and lowercase.

I wish I could link you to the video, but it's behind a paywall as part of the best Javascript course on the entire Internet:

    https://www.lynda.com/course-tutorials/Good-Parts-JavaScript-Web/604268-2.html

Pretty sure Douglas brings it up in either "Programming style", or "Composition".

He uses it as an example of the importance of writing code that communicates to the programmer as well as it communicates to the computer.

AND ITALICS! We had this talk once before on the forum, but a Roman invented Italics to designate informal, hip writing. It wasn't used for emphasis until much, much later.

The interwebs seem to indicate that no one really knows why we switched over (various theories have been presented and well argued), but that we do agree that the spaces are first recorded (well, recorded and lasting) in Irish/Anglo-saxon Bibles in 600/700 BCE.

Basically we're probably both a bit right, and now I have a copy of the "Space Between Words: The Origins of Silent Reading (Figurae: Reading Medieval Culture)" in my Amazon wishlist :p

I mean, you also have the fact that similar events/changes happen in different places it slightly different ways too. There are about 5 ways bread was invented in vaguely the same way, in different parts of the world- and lauguage has a lot of similar occurences like that. And even when something is "first recorded," it obvs doesn't account for all the shit we have never seen or was destroyed, etc. There are probably multiple explanations for spaces tbh.
