    I'm still on 8.1 on this computer b/c the low-latency performance for my RME audio card is worse with the W10 driver for now.

    That, and this computer is my main projects computer where I work on things for clients. If 8.1 --> 10 breaks things like 8 --> 8.1 did, I'm in trouble.

    All my others have 10 and I love it, though.

    Honestly I just use Windows Defender for active protection. Most other active AVs are so nazi like that.

    I haven't used anything for 7 years (since I dropped using the last trace of any pirated software whatsoever) and have been completely fine.

    Keep Windows up to date, keep your browsers up to date, only install legitimate software, and don't make a habit of regularly visiting irreputable sites.

    I'd say "keep your firewall on", but if you're on your own private network, the firewall built into the modem/router is usually sufficient with its default settings.

    Windows Defender keeps itself out of the way so it isn't a big deal. Mostly people just need to pre-order common sense 2018 or find a used copy of 2017.

    I keep Windows Defender disabled, too.

    It's one of the biggest offenders for DPC Latency spikes, and this computer is optimized from the BIOS, to the drivers, to the driver settings, to the software running, to keep low and stable DPC latency.

    For the first time in my life, I actually considered getting into a Macbook to segue back into programming, since Macs are the only hardware platform that can run Linux, Windows, and Mac OS natively (Hackintoshes don't count, and they're desktops, not laptops).
