I think it really depends on the temp agency. The only one I felt ever did me any good was the one run through the state (which is ironic). Some of the temp agencies in this area are absolute ASSHOLES to people. One didn't want to put me in any office jobs because I had no "experience" (never mind my college degree would have probably made me more qualified than most of the so-called "experienced" people they did put in jobs). The rest were pretty much just "check their website and apply for whatever jobs might fit you".

I have so many good replies to this from personal experience over this past year, but I've already spent my daily allotment of "rightbutnotcorrect™ points", plus it's probably not things I'm supposed to disclose. Lol.

I thought about going through a temp agency but in WV they give you $9 to $10 jobs and expect you to dress up ..I like being in my pjs. :) (plus they stick me in customer service or telemarketing).

I do need to do financial reports for TH this year... :emoji_thinking:
I tend to not ask if people will help do something. Instead I just give them a task list / responsibilities - mix in a dash of flattery - and expect greatness. :emoji_laughing:

I thought it was you care more "not being homeless" than liking your job is when you became a real adult.

So, the way any temp agency works (other than government run ones, like state ones as you mentioned) is that sadly you as the candidate are NOT our customer, our customers are our clients which are the companies, and you are actually our products that we are selling. It isn't necessarily that we don't believe you can do an office job without experience, but when our client tells us "needs a minimum of x years experience doing y," then we risk getting "fired" by the client if we're submitting outside of their criteria.

A lot of recruiters have really strict numbers too, on how many people they interview throughout the day. I'm not going to lie when I say I wasted some people's time even if I knew I couldn't use them just to get my numbers in, because if I didn't, I'd get fired. Basically it went something like, I had to find 5 qualified people to submit to clients every day, but I'd have to do a minimum of 25 interviews. Of course, the hope is that we can use you somewhere, sometime, eventually but we don't always have immediate job openings that we think we can submit you for.

That being said, a good recruiter will spin a qualified candidate and if they believe in them, they will submit them. Towards the end of my recruiting career I was entirely focused on hiring entry level tech support people. The client originally wanted only people who had customer service call center experience, and I convinced them that kids working at Best Buy and such were way better qualified even if they didn't have office experience because they will not only fit better into the culture of the company, but be more qualified than someone who has office experience.

The same way that a recruiter's M.O. is a numbers game to find the right candidate, candidates should approach agencies in the same way. It's all a numbers game. If you get your name and resume out to enough of them, one of them is going to have a job for you. You just have to sell yourself enough to make them believe that you're worth selling, too. I'm proof in the pudding, I work in finance and I can't even do basic addition without a calculator. I'm still a great fit for the job though, and I had to convince my recruiter why I was the right one.
